Today, May 5th (Cinco de Mayo), commemorates the Mexican defeat of France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. This day remains a symbol of the Mexican people’s struggle against imperialistic forces. Yet in another part of the world, in Israel, May 5th is Holocaust Memorial Day. From sundown May 4th through sundown May 5th Israeli’s will remember their 6 million brothers and sisters who were murdered by the Nazi regime.
Today at 10am Israel time, all activities will cease; all traffic on the roads will stop as people remember what happened and pledge that it will never happen again. Yet, this day of remembrance comes when Israel is again surrounded—this time by terrorists, such as Hamas, ISIS, and Hezbollah—terrorists who have pledged Israel’s destruction. While we mourn with the Jewish people over their painful past, let us also pray for their protection from similar enemies today, and for their salvation through Jesus Christ.

Having known a survivor of Auschwitz a few years ago makes this time period a little more relevant to me. How the history books could eliminate this is unfathomable.
