The giving of thanks to God is not just a holiday—it’s a necessity for godly living. According to the Bible, the lack of thanksgiving results in people not thinking straight. Scriptures admonish the giving of thanks “in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18); we are to approach God with “thanksgiving” (Psalm 100:4); being thankful helps us to fulfill the call to “live in peace” (Colossians 3:15); and worry overwhelms someone who does not express thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6).
When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Church at Rome, he noted this a people, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:21 (NIV).
Note that as a result of not glorifying God as God and the lack of thanksgiving, their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. They lacked understanding and direction, and as a result they walked down an increasingly sinful life path.
Thanksgiving is not just an action, but a mindset that brings understanding, that illuminates our mind for direction in life, and produces a life of blessing from God. So…develop a thankful heart—it’s good for the soul!
